This is a short article about the Scottsdale school board closing Zuni Elememntary and merging the school with Mcdowell Mountain Ranch's Desert Canyon Elelmentary School.

Closure of Zuni School among options Scottsdale board considering

When Zuni Elementary School parents heard that one of the options being considered by the Scottsdale school board was to close their campus and divide its students between two schools, they were caught off guard.

"We felt blindsided," said parent Kristy Davenport.

Superintendent John Baracy's original plan called for Aztec Elementary School, 13636 N. 100th St. to merge with Zuni, 9181 E. Redfield Road, which would allow Cheyenne Traditional School, 11130 E. Cholla St., to move to Aztec's campus.

"Up until that point, we didn't have much to protest about," Davenport said.

At the school board's May 6 meeting, board member Molly Holzer brought up the option of dividing Zuni's students between Aztec and Desert Canyon Elementary School, 10203 E. McDowell Mountain Ranch Road.

The Zuni campus is about half-filled.

The Scottsdale school board meets today to further discuss whether to close a school in the 2009-10 school year.

These are the options that school board members wanted more information on in addition to the original option:

• Convert Aztec, Zuni, and Desert Canyon elementary schools to kindergarten through eighth-grade schools and move Cheyenne Traditional to Desert Canyon Middle School.

• Convert Aztec to a kindergarten through eighth-grade school, combine Zuni with Desert Canyon Elementary and Middle School and close Zuni.

• Look at options for a traditional school in the Coronado area, an addition of at least one K-8 school in each of the five high-school areas, another K-8 school in the Desert Mountain area. And look at consolidating one school in the north and the south.

• Move the district's Education Center, 3811 N. 44th St., to a more central location.
